A lush, water-cooled descent through the ancient rainforest of Yanbaru — one of the most biodiverse jungles in the world and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Follow a mountain stream all the way to the sea, wading crystal pools, scrambling boulders, and pausing at small waterfalls, before a bento lunch where the river meets the reef.

The day.

Meet at Miyagi Community Center
Welcome at the meeting point, shuttle to trek start point. Gear up, safety briefing, and we're off.

River descent to the sea
Follow the stream to the coast through thick Yanbaru jungle. Wade pools, cross boulders, and pass small waterfalls. One short rope section halfway — three metres of rock face, up and down.

Bento lunch by the water
We stop where the river meets the reef. A proper bento lunch, wide open views, and calm shallow water to float in while you eat. No rush.

Return upstream
The same route back at a relaxed pace. Revisit the pools, duck into small caves, cool off, and take the photos you missed on the way down.

The trek starts in Yanbaru — the ancient rainforest that covers the northern tip of Okinawa and was recognised as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2021. It's one of the most biodiverse subtropical forests on the planet, home to species found nowhere else on earth, and most visitors never set foot inside it. This route does.
The trail begins at a jungle spring where the water is cold and clear and the canopy closes overhead almost immediately. From here the route follows the river all the way to the ocean — about an hour and forty five minutes of boulder hopping, wading, and the odd short swim, with the sound of water the whole way down.
It's not a difficult route, but it's a physical one. The river does most of the work — your job is to follow it. There's one section midway that requires a short climb up and down a rope on a small rock face, nothing more than three metres. After that, the valley opens out and the light changes as you get closer to the coast.

- Weather: itinerary may adjust or postpone during heavy rain or high river flow. Safety first.
- Kita interchange 7/11 pick up point also available for those without transportation.

The Culture & Coast tour with Aya and Yumi was fantastic! I really appreciated their focus on the experience, along with being so attentive and willing to explain and teach us at every step. It was so informative, I feel like I gained a whole new appreciation for Okinawa and the history of this great island. The pair were also working so well together professionally when they passed on knowledge, and they even learned from each other at times. It amazed me how open they were. There is so much knowledge to Okinawa. Other tours I've been a part of tend to dip into snapshots and photos at every turn and feel very detached from the experience, but this one will be memorable because of the attention and focus on our experience, whether at the fish market, the bunker, or the coast. I admit, I had many many questions, but they were patient and shared what they could openly, too!
We joined jungle river trekking tour and it was hands down one of the highlights of our whole trip. If you're looking for something a little more adventurous during your stay in Okinawa, this is it! We spent the day walking along rocks, half soaked in the river, making our way through the jungle. It was such a fun and refreshing way to experience Okinawa's nature up close, definitely not a typical sightseeing day. Our guide Yumi made the whole experience even better. She's a local but has also lived abroad for a while, so she's fluent in English and just has this well-rounded, worldly perspective. She took the time to walk us through the local culture and history. She also introduced us to the butterflies, the bugs that we saw along the way. We even ended up in a great conversation about Gen Z, which was such a fun and unexpected bonus. She took very good care of us to ensure we were safe, and was very patient with our questions. You could tell she genuinely loves what she does and loves sharing it with people. This has been one of the highlights of my trip, so thank you to the Evertrail team!
We booked a full day north Okinawa tour and requested both a river trek and a hike up Mount Katsuudake. We had a great time with Yumi (who is fluent in English and - as a native Okinawan - very knowledgeable on local customs). She kept the mood light and fun.
