The day.

  • Arrival

Ferry to Tokashiki, and onto two wheels

We meet at Tomari Port and cross to Tokashiki, a little over an hour by ferry. On arrival we collect our electric bikes. The motor takes the hills so you can keep your eyes on the view.

  • Remembrance

Where the Battle of Okinawa began

In 1945 the Kerama Islands were the first ground taken in the Battle of Okinawa. We visit the island memorial, learn what happened here, and pause to pay our respects. A still, grounding way to begin.

  • Ryukyu era

    A boatmaster's stone walls

A short ride on stand the stone walls of a Ryukyu era boatmaster's home. His family captained the trading ships to China. It is the island's oldest protected treasure, and proof Tokashiki was once worldly.

  • The lookouts

    The island from above

From here the island is ours. We ride to a run of lookouts where the Kerama Blue opens out below. Time to stop and take it in. No crowds, no rush.

  • Aharen

Lunch and time by the water

We roll down into Aharen, a small beach town on the south coast. Lunch is local and unhurried. Afterwards the time is yours. Swim, walk the sand, or sit with the water.

    Arahen local lunch (included)
  • The reef

    Snorkelling with sea turtles

Then we go under. A guided snorkel over the shallows, where green sea turtles feed and glide. We keep our distance and let them come to us.

  • The ride back

The long way to the ferry

A last stretch of coast and a few more lookouts, then back to return the bikes and catch the fast ferry home. Naha by early evening, Tokashiki still with you.

The longer story

Most people come to the Kerama Islands for one colour. The blue is real, and Tokashiki has it in abundance. But the island keeps more than a coastline. It remembers the trading ships of the Ryukyu Kingdom, when island families captained voyages to China and built walls that still stand. It remembers the spring of 1945, when the Kerama Islands became the first ground taken in the Battle of Okinawa, and Tokashiki lost so many of its own. We hold both. The day begins in stillness, at a memorial where we pay our respects. Then the island opens up. Empty lookouts. Warm shallows. A quiet beach town and a long lunch. Turtles moving under the surface as though the water were theirs, which it is. By the time we ride back to the ferry, Tokashiki is no longer a name on a map. It is a place you understand.

I arranged the culture and coast tour. I was running a little late but Yumi was super understanding. I learned so much about the food and culture of Okinawa in this tour. The ride was comfy and very enjoyable, listening to Okinawan related music and I even gave a new artist rec to tour guide! The Former IJN hq tour was very informative and solemn place. By the end of the tour I understood why Giza Banta cliff is important to people here. I definitely recommend this tour to people that want to learn more about Okinawa but may not have an itinerary that allows for island hopping/shorter stays. I also did their Izakaya hopping tour during my stay in Okinawa. Again, Yumi did amazing job explaining the drinking culture here and Okinawan specialty foods. If I ever were to visit Okinawa again, now I know where to go and also book longer stays and tours! どうもありがとう!

We had an absolutely amazing day with Evertrail Tours! Our guide, Aya, was super friendly, moderated the whole day, and told us so many interesting things about the island. What made it even better: she even took photos and videos of us, so we have wonderful memories to take home. In the morning, we did a beautiful hike to the waterfall, and in the afternoon we went canoeing – and Aya was with us the entire time, guiding us safely and in great spirits throughout the day. Everything was perfectly organized, the atmosphere was fantastic, and we felt completely comfortable the whole time. Thank you so much for this unforgettable excursion! We can recommend Evertrail Tours 100% and would book again anytime

More than just a tour. It felt like exploring Okinawa with old friends! I cannot recommend Yumi and Aya enough! As a first time visitor to Okinawa, I was nervous travelling alone but these two incredible women made me feel completely at home from the very first moment. Every day was a perfectly curated adventure Northern Tour Yumi took us on an easy jungle hike that opened up to the most majestic and breathtaking waterfall. It was powerful and serene all at once. Then came the canoeing through the mangroves, gliding through calm waters while Yumi passionately explained why these "valuable forests" are the heartbeat of Okinawa's coastline. Her energy and deep connection to this land made the experience unforgettable. The Ultimate Adventure Loop (IE Island) This island is an absolute gem and Yumi's meticulous attention to detail made it flawless. We started with snorkelling in crystal clear waters, with both Yumi and the instructor right beside us, pointing out colourful marine life and keeping everyone safe. After drying off, we cycled to Mt. Gusuku for the famous 300 step hike, rewarded with 360° blue views. Yumi then revealed the island's hidden treasures: the Pawn Shop Ruin, the dramatic Wajee Viewpoint, the sacred Shota Temple and the mystical Nya-tiya Cave, where she recounted the wartime stories of the "Thousand-Man Cave" and the legendary power stone. Honestly, I want to keep this place a secret forever, but it's too magical not to share! Cultural Immersion with Deep History The cave tours were a true eye opener and Aya made them utterly transcendent. She took us first to Cave Okinawa, a dramatic limestone chamber that immediately set the tone for the journey ahead. From there, we moved to Shimuka Gama Cave, where the weight of history pressed in from every wall, a powerful reminder of the civilians who sought refuge there during the Battle of Okinawa. We then explored Onna Village Uduigama, a sacred space rich in local folklore and ancestral resonance. Throughout each cave, Aya doesn't just recite facts; she speaks with her entire being. When she tells you about the everyday lives, wartime struggles and enduring traditions woven into these chambers, her eyes glow with immense pride and a palpable ancestral connection. Her eye contact is magnetic; it expresses raw emotion, shows her full attention, builds an instant bond and gently guides the conversation so you feel drawn into the story rather than just listening. You don't just learn about the Eisa drum rhythms echoing through these walls; you feel them through her gaze. The history isn't in textbooks; it's alive in her eyes. After emerging from the caves, she treated us to a wonderful lunch at the local market in Onna Village, a vibrant spot where we sampled fresh Okinawan produce, savoury local dishes, and handmade treats that perfectly refuelled us for the rest of the day. Foodie Heaven: The Izakaya hopping was a feast! We dove straight into local flavours; the sea grapes were perfectly briny and the mozuku seaweed noodles were an absolute must-try. What truly sets this experience apart is the passion. Yumi and Aya aren't just guides; they are proud custodians of Okinawan heritage. Yumi's eagle eyed attention to logistics and safety combined with Aya's soul stirring storytelling, made every moment seamless and profound. They are knowledgeable, considerate, and went out of their way to make sure everyone in our group was comfortable and having a blast. I came to Okinawa knowing no one, but I left with two lovely Okinawan friends. If you love learning, discovering, and eating your way through a culture, this tour is for you. Suitable for all ages! As they say here in Okinawa: Makutu soke, nankuru nai sa – if you live with sincerity and honesty, everything will work out in the end. I trusted the journey and it brought me straight into the hearts of this beautiful island and its people. 🌺
